About the course

The Ö3 course consists of 5 lessons and takes place partly in a driving facility where students experience the effects of speed and forces on vehicles.

Focus Areas

At Ö3, special emphasis is placed on giving students opportunities to practice driving “outside their comfort zone” — in a specially equipped venue focusing on real conditions and responses. The teaching combines theoretical material with practical exercises, so you don’t just gain knowledge — but also real experience of how driving manifests in situations that can arise in Icelandic traffic.

In the practical section, you’ll drive a vehicle under safe guidance, encountering conditions such as slippery roads, tight turns, emergency braking, and other challenges requiring resourcefulness and understanding. Special equipment and a driving track will be used where students experience the effects of speed, vehicle characteristics, and safety equipment – as there is a noticeable difference when emergency braking on a smooth road compared to icy conditions.

The goal is for you to understand both how the vehicle responds and how you as a driver react – before taking the final step toward getting your license. You thus get a head start: understanding how responsibility lies with both you and the vehicle, and skills built on practice and experience – not just theory. This also means you’re better prepared for the variable conditions often found on Icelandic roads – whether it’s turns, ice, poor visibility, or unexpected oncoming traffic.

Teaching Structure

The course is structured so that students receive a brief introduction to what’s ahead (20 minutes). After the introduction, the group goes to the skid car and Prevention House. At the end, students come together again to discuss their experience in the skid car and Prevention House and how they can use this experience to respond to unexpected situations while driving in traffic.
